Sciatica Care in Marin County

Sciatica… low back pain running down one or both legs. Sometimes it’s not pain down the legs. It could be tingling, or numbness, or it could be all three. Sometimes weakness of the legs is involved.

The Medical Approach

Woman with low back painMost people begin dealing with sciatica by popping some Advil or Aleve. When that doesn’t work, they go to The Doctor, who prescribes something stronger. When that doesn’t work, it’s off to the orthopedist, who will order an MRI and/or a CT scan, render a “better diagnosis,” and change the prescription. “Dr. Ortho” may inject the allegedly responsible with corticosteroids. I tell people that this is a good alternative if you plan to die within six months. Why? Often you do get good relief from those shots for half a year, sometimes more, but the drug itself cause massive damage to the joint surfaces in an already damaged joint. So, for a few months of some relief, the shot is causing further, permanent damage. Not a good deal.

After the failure of the drugs and the shots, “Dr. Ortho” will discuss if  “you are a candidate for surgery.” If you think that this is delicate surgery, no, it is not. It is like carpentry, rough carpentry… drills, chisels, mallets, screws, adhesives. Every time, spinal surgery creates further Vertebral Subluxation Complex (VSC), often increasing pain and disability. These procedures are barbaric, and do not address Cause. And, there are the inherent risks to surgery… anesthesia reaction, nocosomial (from the hospital) infection and prolonged recovery.

Please keep in mind that, even if the surgery “works” (your pain is reduced), because you are still subluxated, your health is still at risk in general, and, in the case of sciatica which involves the lumbar spine, more particularly your bladder, bowel and reproductive organs.

The Chiropractic Approach

As with all things, we look to the cause, Vertebral Subluxation Complex (VSC). With gentle, specific, scientific chiropractic adjustments, I deal with Cause. Pain relief is a nice side effect of chiropractic care. It’s as simple as that.

Sciatica is NOT a leg problem. It is a spinal problem, mostly the lumbar spine (low back), but it can also involve the upper cervical spine (right under your skull), as well as your hips. In Chiropractic, we deal with the problem by correcting the cause, not covering up the symptom.

Please… beware of chiropractors who seek to treat your pain with everything under the sun… hot packs, cold packs, electrical stimulation, ultrasound, cold lasers, and various brands of “pain glop” that they rub on you. Especially be wary of those who advertise “disc decompression tables,” which is just fancy traction. In no way is any of this Chiropractic, for, in no way doe any of this seek to correct Vertebral Subluxation Complex (VSC). It’s all third-rate physical medicine. Realize that I left med school to become a chiropractor. Rely on the real thing… Chiropractic. You’ve endured failure with regular medicine long enough. Why go in for amateur medicine?

Patient Testimonials

“When I came here, I was in so much pain, I could barely walk. Now, not only can I walk pain-free, I can jump, run and bike. My body feels more flexible than it was before.”

– Lauren B., San Anselmo

“I have been going to traditional doctors for years, trying to alleviate leg pain and numbness in my foot. I went to physical therapy, had spinal injections, and took medication. Nothing helped. I couldn’t sleep through the night, as I’d wake up in severe pain. I thought that my condition was chronic, but then I ran across Dr. Harte’s flyer and decided to go see him. Since seeing Dr. Harte, my leg pain is gone, numbness in my foot is dissipating and I can sleep through the night without ANY pain. I am so thrilled that I went to him. He’s the best. I would wholeheartedly recommend him.”

– Grace M., Corte Madera

“Finally, the left leg is less painful. The idea that I can get rid of the pain without drugs and improve everything, especially the immune system… amazing!”

– Athene T., San Rafael
